The Athens Area Arts Council hosts several events throughout the year to educate artists and help unite the Athens arts community. Regular events throughout the year include:
- Quarterly Artist Grants
- Lunch-n-Learn events
- Twenty for 20 Artist Challenges
In addition to events, AAAC also has sponsored several projects to enhance public art and the effect the arts has on our community. These include:
You, Me and the Bus
You, Me and the Bus is the first public/private partnership between Athens Area Arts Council, The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government, The Athens Transit System and the citizens of Athens. This unique competition sought artistically designed bus shelter designs that will be functional pieces of public art.
We are working with local businesses and the Downtown Development Authority to revitalize the art in the College Ave. parking deck.
THE ATHENS FILM ARTS INSTITUTE (AFAI) has a new window of opportunity to buy the building that houses Ciné, and with this goal will be launching a three-year, $2.5 million capital campaign, which will cover the purchase and maintenance of the building, improvement of facilities, and expanded opportunities for programming.
Chess and Community is a youth development organization that impacts and equips youth with real world hands-on experiences through mentoring, traveling and community service.
The Winterville Marigold Festival began over 30 years ago as a way to beautify and renovate the town and for the purpose of promoting friendship. Each year the festival features juried arts and crafts, barbecue and other food vendors, dancing and entertainment in the park, the Marigold 10K, parade, and other events.
