Inspired by public poster art of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the mid-20th century, ATHENS BANNER PROJECT will fund members of the Athens artistic population, focusing on those working in the service/hospitality or retail industry who have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our hope is that the banners will spread messages of resiliency, unity and support for our local culture and community. Funded by the Athens Downtown Development Authority (ADDA), five artists who are in the service/hospitality/retail industry, and impacted by the pandemic, will receive $350 each for original art banner designs. 130 banners will be printed (26 copies per artist) on vinyl and given to each of the 130 storefronts in downtown Athens, GA for display during the summer of 2020.
Deadline for submissions will be 29 May 2020 and artists selected will be notified by 3 June 2020. The project timeline will extend through the month of June with banners to be displayed over the summer.
Artists applying should have relied on employment in the service/hospitality or retail industry as of 1 January 2020.
When applying, artists should have the following ready:
- 2–3 images of recent, original two-dimensional artwork or text-based art reflecting the their visual style
- A brief, written statement of interest in the project and/or a written description of how you would approach the project [required]
- A brief written statement about how you have personally been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic [optional]
While applications from artists working in a variety of media will be considered, artists should note that the project outcome will be a two-dimensional, visual art product. An ideal applicant should have skills and experience in two-dimensional, visual art. Acceptable media may include, but are not limited to, paintings, drawings, digital images, photographs, original poems or song lyrics.
Artists will be provided with a vertically oriented vinyl banner that is 30” tall x 24” wide with two grommet holes in upper corners (banners will hang in storefront windows using provided suction cup hooks). All artwork must be original work by the artist, without any infringements of intellectual property, copyright, or trademark.
Applicants should note that final submissions should be two-dimensional works scale-able to the provided banner’s height without significant image cropping or loss. For example, 10” H x 8” W would be scale-able by 3x or 15” H x 12” W would be scale-able by 2x). There will be a strip at the bottom of the banner with information including the artists name. Digitization of all artists’ work will be processed by the contracted printing service; artists will not be responsible for digitizing their artwork, nor will they be offered additional compensation if they elect to do so.
